Since joining Matrix in 2001, Nick has invested primarily in Internet, software and information services companies. His investments include BrightWire, a real-time information service for global corporate news; Care.com, an online marketplace for family care services; Conductor, a provider of a SaaS platform to optimize, monitor and manage natural search; Gilt Groupe, a private e-commerce network for event-based sales; Intent Media, an innovative online advertising provider currently in stealth mode; JBoss, the leading open source application server provider (acquired by Red Hat); OatSystems, an RFID application platform company (acquired by Checkpoint Systems); and TheLadders.com, the leading online destination for $100,000+ jobs.
Nick joined Matrix in 2001 after working in the high tech investment banking group at Goldman Sachs & Co. and the technology and media group at McKinsey & Co., where he worked with Internet, media and software companies on a variety of strategic, financial and operational issues.
Born in London to American parents, Nick studied at Stanford University and Oxford University, where he was a Marshall Scholar. Nick took a year off from his time at Stanford in 1990 and traveled to Russia, where he studied at Moscow State University, worked as a production assistant with Sixty Minutes and served as a researcher on the book “Charlie Wilson’s War.”
Nick’s primary passion outside of venture investing is international development, and in particular accelerating international development through entrepreneurship. Nick serves on the board of Endeavor, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping entrepreneurs in developing countries.
Nick is an avid windsurfer and skier, and an aspiring kite boarder.
Nick is professional, thoughtful, kind and sharp. He steps back and lets you run your company, taking more of a consultative approach, as in, "You know more about your business than I do, but you might consider this."
Sheila Marcelo, Founder and CEO, Care.com
I called five other entrepreneurs who have worked with Matrix Partners before I committed to working with the firm. Matrix has a track record of sticking with entrepreneurs through thick and thin. That is important to me. There will always be fluctuations in a start-up. You need a partner who will be in it for the long haul, and not get unduly distressed over week-to-week fluctuations in the business.
Marc Cenedella, Founder and CEO, TheLadders.com
