San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

Unidesk® announced today at Citrix Synergy 2012 that its desktop layering software is now available as part of Dell’s portfolio of desktop virtualization solutions (DVS). Dell DVS Enterprise, designed for organizations with demanding IT environments and diverse end-user requirements, incorporates Unidesk to make it easier and more affordable for IT organizations to implement virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). DVS Enterprise with Unidesk combines the latest Dell 12G servers, Dell storage and Dell network components, broker and hypervisor software, services and end points, and Unidesk virtual desktop provisioning and management software.

Unidesk integrates with technology from both Citrix and VMware to provide the vital application delivery, image management, storage optimization, and personalization capabilities needed to simplify and expand VDI implementations. Unidesk also announced today at Citrix Synergy that it has added the ability to provision desktops directly into Citrix® XenDesktop® catalogs and groups, bringing its broker integration on par with VMware View™ and giving DVS Enterprise customers the option to use Unidesk with either solution.

“Our goal with DVS Enterprise is to bring a robust and flexible end to end solution with enhanced levels of management and cost optimization,” said Dell’s Steve Lalla, vice president and general manager of the company’s mobility solutions group. “With Unidesk layering technology added to DVS Enterprise, we make it easier and more affordable for IT to deploy and manage virtual desktops leveraging the DVS Integrated Solutions Stack infrastructure. We are now able to give each end user a personal and uncompromised persistent desktop experience every time they log in.”

Customers Benefit from DVS Enterprise with Unidesk

The University of Connecticut, which has built one of higher education’s most state-of-the-art VDI platforms, has deployed Dell DVS Enterprise with Unidesk to easily provision and manage virtual desktops for Master’s students and faculty at the School of Business.

“Dell DVS and Unidesk are a great fit for any organization looking to simplify virtual desktop deployments, deliver different types of applications, and implement VDI for a wide range of users and use cases,” said Jeremy Pollack, director of IT for the University of Connecticut School of Business. “The combination of Dell and Unidesk has been instrumental to the success of our vPC desktop virtualization initiative from both IT operations and user acceptance perspectives.”

“Desktop virtualization has become a disruptive force as many enterprises transition away from costly device-centric to more people-centric desktop and application delivery models,” said Chris Wolf, research vice president at Gartner. “Gartner has consistently heard from early adopters that virtual desktop deployments struggle to scale when traditional PC and application lifecycle methodologies are applied. To that end, IT decision makers should leverage modern application layering and delivery solutions in order to achieve the OpEx savings they expect, and the scalability they require.”

Unidesk and Citrix XenDesktop

Unidesk’s new integration with Citrix XenDesktop enables IT administrators to provision desktops customized with different combinations of Unidesk operating system and application “layers” directly into XenDesktop catalogs and groups. Separate administrative tools are no longer needed to create virtual desktops, package and deliver applications, manage Microsoft Windows gold images, optimize storage, and sustain desktop customizations such as profile settings and user-installed applications. In addition to greater VDI simplicity, Unidesk also offers a number of unique VDI management capabilities, including:

Central layering of standard applications, including the many applications that cannot be packaged and delivered by application virtualization technology. Once layered, applications can be assigned to one or more desktops without reinstallation.
Central packaging and delivery of departmental and “one-off” applications. Applications required by small groups of users have been a major obstacle to VDI success because IT organizations don’t have the time or resources to virtualize them, while building them into gold images adds patching cost and complexity. With Unidesk, administrators can package departmental applications in the time it takes to install them once on a regular desktop, making them easy to centrally deliver, patch, and update.
One gold image for all desktops. Unidesk’s ability to layer all applications separately enables IT organizations to use one clean, pristine gold image for all desktops. By eliminating gold image sprawl common in complex VDI environments, Unidesk greatly minimizes the cost of installing Windows hot fixes and service packs.
Fast conflict resolution. By using Unidesk to manage the operating system gold image, applications, and user customizations with one, holistic solution instead of point tool silos, IT organizations can quickly repair damage caused by user-installed applications and other user configurations with Level 1 support staff, and avoid costly service escalations.

“The new integration between Unidesk and Citrix XenDesktop really completes the VDI picture for us, giving us best-in-class management and brokering,” said Dru Lesnick, Assistant Vice President of Information Systems at Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance in West Des Moines, Iowa. “Our Unidesk Layer Builders can package all of our applications in minutes, from standard office productivity apps to complex property and casualty apps. Then, we can custom-build desktops using different layer combinations and make them available through XenDesktop, all in a few clicks.”

Unidesk is a member of the Citrix Ready® program and has completed the Citrix Ready testing process to make its desktop layering solution verified for use with Citrix XenDesktop.

Unidesk with the new Citrix XenDesktop integration is available immediately through a growing network of Unidesk channel partners. Dell DVS Enterprise with Unidesk is available today through Dell direct. Additional DVS and Unidesk enhancements and service offerings are expected to be available later this year.

“Our customers have validated how Unidesk layering technology simplifies VDI, expands use cases, and brings greater ROI to desktop virtualization implementations,” said Don Bulens, Unidesk CEO. “We’re thrilled that Dell has recognized these same value propositions, and has further validated layering as a VDI game-changer by making Unidesk part of DVS Enterprise. With Dell’s market presence and Unidesk’s software innovation, the many benefits of virtual desktops are finally available to all.”
