Plexxi, a well-funded networking technology firm with offices in Cambridge and Nashua, N.H., is not yet three years old — but already well on its way to heading out of startup mode, founder and CEO Dave Husak said in an interview.
"It's been a very compact, compressed lifecycle," he said. "We are pretty far down the tail of the startup experience."
Launched in February 2011, Plexxi is aiming to pioneer the next era of networking technology for data centers, and has been generating revenue from its products for the past year.
The products — a combination of software and hardware — allow for networking within data centers that doesn't rely solely on switching. The firm dubs its approach "affinity" networking, in which networking capacity is directed in real-time by application requirements.
The products aim to build a network that is truly defined by software, rather than by where the wires are located, Husak said.
The end result is lower cost, power consumption and latency, he said.
Plexxi isn't disclosing how many customers it has so far, but Husak said top industries include media, oil and gas, e-commerce and cloud backup. Customer announcements are also planned for the near future, he said.
Husak pointed to Cisco's recent announcement of its application centric infrastructure (ACI) strategy as evidence that Plexxi has been on to something.
"Cisco ACI is very much in tune with a lot of the principals that Plexxi is delivery with affinity networking," Husak said. "The very idea you would manage networks in the way that Plexxi does has been validated, right up to the guy who owns the bulk of the market."
Plexxi has raised $48.5 million in venture capital to date, from Matrix Partners and North Bridge Venture Partners.
The firm may raise additional funding for scaling and investment, though there isn't an immediate need, Husak said. "We're still spending our Series B money," he said.
Plexxi has 66 employees, with six of those at an office in San Francisco and the rest split between Cambridge and Nashua.
