Right on the heels of raising $4 million, Java cloud computing startup CloudBees has announced that it has acquired Stax Networks, a pioneering Java Platform-as-a-Service solutions provider.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

To date, over 3,000 applications have been deployed on Stax. CloudBees says the integrated RUN@cloud service will be available in January 2011.

The merger will accelerate the delivery of CloudBees’ own Java PaaS, dubbed RUN@cloud, which complements the company’s DEV@cloud service (currently in beta with over 300 customers). With the two offerings, CloudBees will offer a fully integrated, development-to-production solution for the cloud environment.

Spike Washburn, founder and CEO of Stax Networks and a founding member of the WebSphere team will join CloudBees’ crew, which boasts deep middleware roots from IBM, JBoss, Macromedia and Sun Microsystems.

Stax Networks was funded by ColdFusion creator JJ Allaire and Baseline Ventures.
