Addition of Airvana’s HubBub Femtocell Brings 3G To Pirelli’s Multifunction broadband CPEs
Chelmsford, MA, December 3, 2008 —
Airvana, Inc. (Nasdaq: AIRV), the company transforming the mobile experience, and Pirelli Broadband Solutions, the broadband access company within the Pirelli Group, today announced that Airvana’s HubBub™ UMTS femtocell has been selected to deliver 3G connectivity as part of Pirelli’s portfolio for fixed-mobile convergence.
Pirelli Broadband Solutions develops products that enable the delivery of innovative services to the connected home and office. Over the past three years Pirelli has become one of the leading suppliers of CPEs for quad-play service providers in Europe, with a portfolio comprising IPTV Set Top Boxes and home and office access gateways for xDSL and FTTx networks.
“Embedding femtocell functionality into our home and office access products is a natural extension of the connectivity options leveraged by our open EpicentroTM middleware for service creation” said Francesco Schiavinato, Sr. Vice President Sales & Marketing, Pirelli Broadband Solutions. “Airvana is known both for its innovation and leadership in industry standards that promote interoperability. These capabilities will help our operator customers deliver a superior service to their subscribers.”
Airvana’s HubBub UMTS femtocell is built on a flexible architecture that enables feature enhancement in response to evolving customer and industry requirements. Airvana and Pirelli both cooperate in Nokia Siemens Networks’ 3G Femto Home Access Solution, an ecosystem that uses a standards-ready open architecture for femto-to-core network interaction. Adherence to these important industry standard initiatives, plus the TR-069 standard for device management, will make it easier to incorporate Pirelli’s HubBub-powered broadband access devices into existing operator networks.
“Femtocells are clearly going to become part of the home network, and the involvement of players with a converged home vision like Pirelli is an enabling step in this direction” said Sanjeev Verma, vice president, femtocell business and corporate development, and co-founder of Airvana. “This partnership enables operators to deliver femtocell capabilities in a way that is simple and powerful for both operator and end-user.”
Airvana helps operators transform the mobile experience for users worldwide. The company’s high-performance technology and products, from comprehensive femtocell solutions to core mobile network infrastructure, enable operators to deliver compelling and consistent broadband services to mobile subscribers, wherever they are. Airvana’s products are deployed in 70 commercial networks on all six continents. The company is headquartered in Chelmsford, Mass., USA, with offices worldwide.
